Biwa is het instrument dat lijkt op de Pipa van China. In Japan gebruiken ze grote en kleinere plectrums en varierende aantal snaren. Elke voor een bepaald doel. De muziek wordt gespeeld aan het hof, bij Bhudistische mantra's, Chanten van verhalen, en voor Samurai (strijders) verhalen.
