April doet wat het wil - 1 april, All Fool's Day

De oorsprong van deze gewoonte is niet zeker, maar zou te maken kunnen hebben met de komst van de Lente aan het einde van Maart. De tijd van het jaar waar Moeder Natuur de mensen 'in de maling neemt' met plotselinge en grillige veranderingen in het weer...regen op het ene moment en zon op het volgende. Of zoals wij in Nederland zeggen: April doet wat het wil. Het maken van praktische grappen dateert hoe dan ook vanaf de oude Romeinse tijd (http://www.novareinna.com/festive/allfool.html). In het Engels heet de eerste dag van april dan ook April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day.

The origins of this custom are somewhat uncertain, but may have initially been related to the arrival of Spring in late March, at which time Mother Nature is said to "fool" the human race with sudden and fickle changes in the weather...showers one minute and sunshine the next. Or like we say in The Netherlands: April does what it wants. (it rimes in Dutch, but not in English :) The playing of practical jokes, however, dates back to Ancient Rome. So in Englisch is the first of April called April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day (http://www.novareinna.com/festive/allfool.html).
